Types and Principles of Motors - Slip Ring
Unlock the secrets of slip rings and their crucial role in motor technology.
What is a slip ring?
A slip ring is a structure that allows for the continuous supply of electricity between a stationary component and a rotating component without interrupting the power. Consider the DC motor we discussed earlier
: DC motors use a commutator and brushes to switch
polarity. If we think about this a little differently, we could attach a ring to a rotating object and have brushes make contact with it, thereby transmitting current via a contact-based method similar to bumper cars.
This structure is called a slip ring.
DC Motor: A contact-based electrical connection structure designed for polarity reversal,
utilizing separate segments. Slip Ring: A contact-based electrical connection structure using a continuous circular ring to supply power to a rotating object.

Applications
As mentioned earlier, the slip ring structure is a method for continuously supplying power to both stationary and rotating components. While
conventional BLDC motors can rotate mechanically indefinitely, in configurations like robotic arms—where power must be supplied to both the stationary base and rotating parts (J1, J2, etc.)—the
power supply becomes difficult because the three-phase power lines and encoder wires for the motor become tangled.
Therefore, by applying a slip ring structure to rotating components that require both infinite rotation and power, the problem of physical cable tangling can be resolved.
